Great Lengths keratin bonds hair extensions Pros & Cons

Great Lengths Canada keratin bonds extensions logo

Regarding keratin bonds hair extensions I am doing a segment of blog posts and youtube videos on Great Lengths Canada. Aimed at informing people on their qualities, features and really to educate and inform someone that might be thinking about hair extensions. I aim to answer any questions you may have so feel free to leave a comment! I have highlighted below a few of the most obvious pros and cons that you will most likely experience if you get these awesome keratin bonds extensions!

Keratin bonds Pros:

PRO: They are 100% real hair. With keratin bonds you can do everything that you would normally do to your hair. I curl them, you can wash, blow dry, colour them- anything you would normally do to your hair you can do to these extensions.

PRO: Their look and feel like little grains of rice. Extremely small the great lengths extensions are virtually invisible.

PRO: They comes in multiple lengths as short as 8 inches or as long as 24 inches.

PRO: There isn’t a lot of maintenance involved so once you get them installed you can basically leave them and till they grow out. You do need to come in once two weeks after they have been installed to make sure they are growing out properly. It’s basically super low maintenance.

PRO: A major pro off this extensions; its made of keratin. It doesn’t damage your hair and because keratin is the protein your hair is naturally made up of it functions just like your real hair. absolutely nothing to worry about.

Time for keratin bonds cons:

CON: The one con of keratin bonds is you can only use them once. Once their in thats it. Once they come out and thats it. There is no way to dress this up or elaborate on it. They are a one time use hair extension that last for 3-5 months.

CON: Another con could potentially be how long it takes to install them. First it depends on how long you are comfortable with sitting down. It can take as little as two hours. or as long as 8 hours depending on how many bundles you have installed in your hair.

Have a great hair day! xo

How long do extensions last?

How long do extensions last?

How long do hair extensions last?

This is a Great Lengths Extension on one of their models.

If we are going to dive into this topic then first we need to make sure we are specific about what kind of extensions you are looking for. There are multiple kinds of hair extensions so lets talk about keratin and fusion bond extensions from Great Lengths Canada.

Great Lengths hair extensions

Great Lengths Canada in cursive writing

Keratin bonds or fusion bond hair extensions are the two kinds I specialize in. Even more specifically, the ones from Great Lengths Canada. I am certified by Great Lengths as a hair extension specialist and it is my passion to ensure you are given the best service and ensure you know everything you need to make your hair extensions last as long as possible without losing quality.

The Great Lengths keratin bonded hair extensions last anywhere from 3-5 months! This is all depending on how well they were installed and how well you take care of them. I give you such a rough estimate because truly it depends how well you are taking care of them.

What about when they grow out?

hair extensions by a hair extension specialist in victoria bc

One of the most popular questions when people are doing an extension consultation with me is. “Will people be able to see my bonds as they grow out?” The truth is people shouldn’t be able to see them. They should look like beautiful long hair and not noticeable that you got extensions. Its important that you deal directly with a hair extension specialist who is not only trained to work specifically with the product they are installing, but one who cares.

I personally am certified with Great Lengths extensions to their standards of application how they were intended to be. They are a company who I really enjoy working with. It has been a blessing selling and applying their products to clients of mine. Their products are superior and last a great length of time. As that bonds grow out it will grow down the shaft of your hair and be slightly more difficult to style your hair. The longer your hair grows out nearing roughly the 3-5 month mark it will just become a hassle. If your hair extensions were installed properly people really should not see them at all during the first 3 months. Having someone who is careful, takes their time and is meticulous in their bonding process is important.

Will I feel my lifestyle change?

hair extensions by a hair extension specialist in victoria bc

Everyone asks this. “How much will my lifestyle change?” Well, they SHOULDN’T effect your lifestyle at all. You can still pull them up and tie your hair back. The installation of them is integral to this factor, when you pull them off of your face you shouldn’t be able to see them at all.

Anything I can’t do with them?

Of all the things you should avoid-running through mud pits. spending 45 days at sea on a raft… Tanning beds, steam rooms and saunas should be avoided, hot springs with lots of steam as well. Anything with high amounts of steam and heat that could potentially soften the bond are not really something that you want to be in.

Hair product tips?

Stay away from dandruff shampoos and harsh shampoos that contain sulfates, since they can deteriorate the extension bonds. Keep conditioner away from from the bonds as much as possible; they can actually loosen the bonds and even slip off. Brush your hair: It is recommended to brush your hair at least twice a day.

You can check out the video I posted on this topic as well. It covers most of the same points. Be sure to give my YouTube channel a follow, I will be posting videos on these Great Lengths extensions over the next few weeks and answering all of the questions you might have and discussing any ideas you may have. Be sure to comment! 🙂

Hair diffuser tutorial

Hair diffuser tutorial

How to properly diffuse your hair

girl blowdrying her hair with a diffuser
Watch my weekly video + these few quick tips and you will be on your way to professional diffusing your hair.

If you are wanting to obtain the perfect curls for the holidays it isn’t just as simple as wash, dry and go! That being said there are a few things I go over in my video that can change the outcome of diffusing your hair dramatically. I decided to do a tutorial on how to properly defuse your hair. Although there are different techniques and methods some girls will implement themselves I go over some of the most important things you can do to improve your routine.

It is important that when you clean your hair prior to diffusing you use a sulphate-free shampoo and hydrating conditioner. Because you will be adding heat to your hair as part of the defusing process, leaving some conditioner in is a good starting point.

Paddle brush & prepare

paddle brush for preparing hair for diffusing
One of my favourite weapons of choice when preparing for this styling!

After beginning with freshly washed hair you should be combing out your hair with either a wide toothed comb or a paddle brush. Always start at the bottom of the hair and work your way upwards, this ensures you aren’t adding any extra strain on your roots and you are working the tangles out a few at a time.

Product: Bumble & Bumble- Gel Oil

Before I actually start to diffuse the hair I apply one of my favourite products for the process.

victoria hairstylist creme
Loose, lengthened curls are no longer a stretch.

What: This frizz-fighting gelee has the hold of a gel and the hydration of an oil – and unfurls wound-up curls to create glossy, elongated shapes.
Why: Our curl-optimizing HydraSculpt Blend™, mixed with Brazilian oils, helps create controlled, moisturized curls.
Who: Ringlets to corkscrews.
When: On clean, damp curls after using Bb.Curl Pre-Style/Re-Style Primer.
How: Scrunch throughout hair. Air-dry or diffuse.
Formulated without: Alcohol, silicones, parabens, sulfates and phthalates.

Separate strands and twist

Once I have successfully applied this product and brushed the hair out of all tangles and knots I begin to separate the hair in sections. (See video for this) It helps to also twist each section in a different direction each strand. Once I have separated the hair into layers of twisted strands I fold my hair over upside down to begin the diffusing.

Two techniques:

One I like to call the UFO and one the claw. For the claw, like it sounds, I apply the diffuser directly to the bottom of the curls, travelling on a vertical plane. I only move the diffuser up and down trying not to disturb the curls as much as possible. As for the UFO I take the diffuser and hover it around the outside of the hair without actually touching it. This allows for a great uniform application of heat without overdoing it.

You can watch my video tutorial which shows every step and exactly how your hair can look at the end. I have my good friend and client Koa let me do the demonstration on her!

Have a great hair day!

blonde haired girl with shaved sized

Shaved sides have been a huge hit in 2016. So many girls deciding to take the leap and shave their sides. Needless to say it looks amazing!!! It doesn’t limit you nearly as much as some people might think when you are styling your hair either.  Once upon a time blonde and black short hairstyles with shaved sides where characteristics of rebellion. So many pop icons used it as a way to express their unique lifestyle. Fashion tendencies change, and so have the hairstyle trends. Haircuts with shaved sides have been growing in popularity over the last several years. in 2016 we have seen a huge shift. Nowadays less people criticize extravagant looks and the majority admires beautiful hairstyles

Cutting your Mom hair

Cutting your Mom hair

Cutting your Mom hair

Girl with bad hair day looking upwards
If you are a new mother and haven’t felt this exact feeling about your hair at one point or another.. I don’t believe you.

Especially those who are new mothers

You may be spending sleepless nights, and mirror stares in the mornings thinking: “This long hair has just GOT to go!” Although it only takes 5 seconds to snip it all off you might not have thought of every angle involved with short hair. The confidence and new style options that short hair brings might excite you, but you should consider these points first!

Ask yourself why you want it. Short.

Donald trump having a bad hair day that looks like corn
Ok, your hair obviously won’t turn out like this. But I thought this was a corny way of proving a point.

OK, not that short and wild, lets be honest with ourselves.

However, making a drastic style switch post-major life changing event, (New child in your life) is not uncommon, but you may regret it. Although hair can give you very fast gratification by the swift cut of a pair of scissors, the feeling may not last. If you are seeking a dramatic chop and your motivation includes being fed up with your long-hair, or simply wanting to try something new then maybe its right for you. If you are in an emotional state and looking to cut your hair so other areas of your life get a boost in time or freedom, like less hassle in the mornings, it may not be right for you.

Consider your texture.

teenage girl laying on white backdrop with hair spread out
Your long beautiful hair’s texture plays a big part in deciding just how short to cut it if you are going to go for the chop!

Everyone at one point has seen a celebrity with what they think is perfect hair. Although many hairstyles are possible with the right styling and product, not everyones hair is the same. Coarse hair can behave completely different than thin hair in short styles. Depending on what you are looking to do to your hair, if you chop it all off, standing in front of the mirror for hours perfecting your hair might really, really suck. Remember those days when you just tossed your hair in a bun and put a little lipstick on?

Figure out your face shape.

Ok, the days of everyone wearing the same hairstyles every day to fit into a style trend are gone. Your face, head, neck, and jawline all affect what style and length will look best on you. Not only does  the shape of your face make a difference to how you will look best in a certain style, but you may also find yourself changing your wardrobe slightly to accommodate your new style. Many moms want a hair length that they can style their hair differently depending on the occasion. Short hair might limit this.

Look at your schedule.

middle aged women at desk with post it notes stuck to her face
This syndrome is real. finding time to do things, especially your hair isn’t easy. First world problems.

Nothing can spend time like a lady doing her hair

The time spent styling your new hair is also one of the most important things to consider. If you are giving yourself a buzz cut this argument may be invalid. The truth is when you newly cut your hair the next morning you will probably spend a significant amount of time in front of the mirror trying to mimic the look your stylist gave you. Every day thereafter as well you will spend time trying to make your new hair look great. Consider the fact bedhead that tells your new hair what to do every day will give you a challenge that you are not used to. When you lose the weight of long hair pulling on your roots you lose the effect of gravity. Your roots will now go in whatever direction they feel like while you sleep.

I hope all these points got your mind thinking a little bit more and hopefully helped you consider some things you haven’t already about your next big hair decision.

Have a great hair day, xo

Hair hacks for brushing your hair properly

Hair hacks Vol.2

How to brush your hair properly

picture of school age girl brushing her hair at life of hair salon with sofia
Theres more to brushing your hair then singing in the mirror to your brush and dreaming about graduation in 10 years.

If you thought you had it all figured out back in elementary school then guess again. Turns out there is a proper way to brush or comb your hair, and you may not have thought about all of these points!

Choose Wisely

Brush or a wide tooth comb

sofia pastor combing her hair with a wide toothed comb
Wide tooth combs are my first choice.

If your hair tangles easily, a densely-packed boar bristle brush will destroy your hair. A paddle brush is the all-around best option for pretty much any hair type. It detangles but is still gentle because the teeth of the brush are further apart and not too dense. One of my favourite choices for this reason is the wide toothed comb. Wide spaced teeth and a gentle feel.

Wet hair can be bad

Final warning!

Wet hair that needs blow dry at life of hair salon in victoria
Trust me, a comb will ruin wet hair. Especially when it looks like this!

I am sure you have heard it before, but consider this your last & final warning: Don’t comb or brush your hair when it’s wet. Doing so can cause major breakage and future split ends since water actually weakens the hair shaft. If you’re in a rush, slick back your post-shower strands into a low pony using a widetooth comb. Thick prongs on a wide toothed comb are not as likely to damage wet hair.

Start from the bottom

Now… it will start to feel natural

sofia pastor brushing her hair from the bottom to the top
Natural, beautiful, untangled hair requires that you start at the bottom.

Brushing your hair from the bottom up feels unnatural at first, awkward and even upside down. But starting from the bottom allows you to eliminate tangles along the hair shaft without the risk of pulling your follicle out at its root. You can also hold your hair against your scalp with your other hand to reduce tension and pulling on your scalp. Beginning at the bottom, separate your hair into horizontal sections and brush each layer one at a time until your strands are silky smooth.

TLC- something you scalp loves

Love it & bad hair days will happen less

over exposed photo of girl by some flowers with healthy hair
Take care of your scalp, and spread your natural oils evenly through your hair.

After all, hair starts at the scalp. The key to keeping it healthy while brushing is to pay attention to the roots. The natural oils that come from your scalp near your hair roots do all of the work in keeping your hair naturally moisturized, healthy, and in one piece. The key to keeping your hair healthy after you have brushed out all of the tangles and knots is to spread the oils. Although you might think spreading these oils will leave you looking greasy it won’t. The oils that are secreted from your scalp help keep your hair healthy and actually increase its life and strength. Once you are done run your brush or comb through your hair from the roots to the tips. Do this softly and smoothly to help spread some of your scalps essential oils and nutrients to your hair.

Hair hack #2

The longer time between shampoos the better

portrait of a girl who needs some hair hacks

Shampooing your hair every day can have a negative effect on controlling your curls. Embracing your naturally curly hair is a wonderful thing, however when you shampoo your hair every single day it can actually damage it. You want the natural oils from your scalp to get a chance to migrate all the way down your hair into your curls and tips! Shampooing will remove all these oils and cause your hair to dry out!!

Hair hack #3

Conditioner used as a styling product

hair hacks model working conditioner through her wet hair after a shower

Conditioner can also be left in your hair after a shower. Shampoo is typically meant to be rinsed out, but depending on your hair type leaving some in will work wonders! Give this a shot yourself, start with maybe 50% of the conditioner left in and let your hair dry before you judge how wet and moist it is. For some people just applying a small amount after showering is the trick. Surprise yourself, spread it evenly through your hair and reap the rewards.

Hair hack #4

Invest in a wide toothed comb

hack hacks showing girl combing out conditioner with a wide toothed comb

Not really a huge investment, but can easily be one of the best value hair hacks for controlling your curls & frizz. After you shower you need to comb out your natural curls to prevent tangling and knots. Start at the bottom of your tips and gradually move closer to your scalp. This will ensure a safe combing effect that leaves your hair free of knots and tangled ends while not ripping any out.

Hair hack #5

Used a diffuser

hair hacks that show a girl blowdrying her hair with a diffuser

Diffusers work wonders for people who often find their hair frizzy and dry after showering. A Diffuser attaches to the end of a blow dryer and it does a great job at protecting your hair from direct, high heat. This allows you to dry your hair without damaging it, therefore heating it up too hot. Each one of these hair hacks will work wonders if you are a curly girl. Try them out!

What, Where & How before you apply product

The What, Where & How.

bad hair day photo for sofia pastor's victoria hairstylist blog3 Things you need to decide before you apply product

There are a few things you need to consider when you are deciding what product to use on your hair. Because hair products are a bunch of chemicals that are made to either control or effect your hair you need to make sure you are using the correct product in the right place and applying it properly!

What product are you going to be using and for what purpose. Depending on the style you are trying to achieve make sure you are using the correct product.

Where you apply your product does make a difference. Whether it is the roots. the middle lengths and tips can effect the overall style that you are trying to achieve.

Are you walking through a cloud, are you applying it concentrated at the roots close to the tip, or at a good distance with even distribution.

Bumble & Bumble

Some of you may know that I regularly use Bumble & Bumbles hair products. Their website is extremely informative and great at solving these three questions before you go ahead and purchase or use a product. Be sure to check our their website at    Bumble & Bumble does a great job at explaining what styles they can be used to achieve, and how to apply them.

Bumble & Bumble Primer Product Review

Bumble & Bumble Primer Product Review

Bumble & Bumble’s Primer Line

3 different Bumble & Bumble Primers, what they are used for, and what you need to know!

Even if you have never heard of primers before and are wondering what to do with them I have highlighted below everything you need to know about each of Bumble & Bumble’s primers and which one is right for you! The purpose of primers are: to even out the porosity of the hair, balance the PH of hair, while nourishing, moisturizing, and detangling your hair prior to styling.

Tonic Lotion

bumble & bumble's tonic lotion bottle
A must before styling.

Tonic lotion is your medium-weight pre styler. You will want to use it on hair thats a little bit more rough. Hair that you can’t run your fingers through because it tangles. The main ingredient is tea tree in the Tonic Lotion. It has a nice smoothing effect on your scalp as well.

  • What: A blend of herbs, vitamins and Tea Tree Oil replaces moisture, soothes, detangles, enhances the performance of products and reminds us of old-school barbers’ elixirs.
  • Who: Anyone; especially dry, coarse, porous or colored hair.
  • When: Daily; to detangle and prepare hair for styling; anytime to dampen and reactivate products already in hair; to wet down hair and lubricate the blade while cutting.
  • How: Spray liberally and evenly on damp hair and work through.

The Prep

bumble & bumble product line primer prep
The ultimate pre-styler.

This primer is a lightweight pre styler. You will want to use it on hair that is already soft, smooth, fine or silky.

  • What: This nutrient-rich detangler reveals texture, enhances the performance of styling products and refreshes already styled hair.
  • Who: Anyone; best for ultra-fine, limp, relatively healthy hair.
  • When: When hair is damp to detangle and prepare hair for styling; anytime to dampen and reactivate products already in hair.
  • How: Spray liberally and evenly (it’s impossible to use too much) on damp hair and work through.

Hairdressers Invisible Oil

bumble & bumble invisible primer oil bottle
A mist of many wonders.

The Invisible oil has a UV and heat protectant in it. Think of the oil as your strongest primer becase it has the UV and heat protectant in it. It is basically designed for chemically damaged hair.  Bleached blondes and anything that looks like its about to break off included. Because this primer it has a lot of oils in it you definitely want to concentrate it towards your mid lengths and ends of your hair. You CAN overuse it, so start of with a smaller amount and a couple of sprays. Brush it through a few times and see how it feels. There has been times I have over done it and used too much, so be careful.

  • What: Infused with 6 featherlight oils it helps soften, detangle, de-frizz, tame flyaways, ease styling and protect against breakage, heat-styling and UV damage.
  • Who: Dry, coarse or brittle hair.
  • When: On damp or dry hair before styling.
  • How: Spray on damp or dry hair, comb through and style.
